    • There are approximately 100,000 miles of blood vessels in the human body.
    •  Seven percent of a humans body weight is made up of blood.
    •  In the early nineteenth century some advertisements claimed that riding the carousel was good for the circulation of blood.
    • Each day 400 gallons of recycled blood are pumped through the kidneys.
    • By donating just one pint of blood, four lives can be saved.

    THE HUMAN LUNG

The human two lungs are made up of a complex latticework of tubes, which are suspended, on either side of the heart, inside the chest cavity on a framework of elastic fibers. Air is drawn in via the mouth and the nose, the latter acting as an air filter by trapping dust particles on its hairs. The air is warmed up before passing down the windpipe, where it's divided at the bottom between two airways called bronchi that lead to either lung.

Within the lungs, the mucus-lined bronchi split like the branches of a tree into tens of thousands of ever smaller tubes (bronchioles), which connect to tiny sacs called alveoli. The average adult's lungs contain about 600 million of these spongy, air-filled structures. There are enough alveoli in just one lung to cover an area roughly the size of a tennis court.
The alveoli are where the crucial gas exchange takes place. The air sacs are surrounded by a dense network of minute blood vessels, or capillaries, which connect to the heart. Those that link to the pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood that needs to be refreshed. Oxygen passes through the incredibly thin walls of the alveoli into the capillaries and is then carried back to the heart via the pulmonary veins. At the same time, carbon dioxide is removed from the blood through the same process of diffusion. This waste gas is expelled as we breathe out.
The rate at which we breathe is controlled by the brain, which is quick to sense changes in gas concentrations. This is certainly in the brain's interests—it's the body's biggest user of oxygen and the first organ to suffer if there's a shortage.

            FACTS OF THE LUNGS

Below are the summary list of what an average human lung is capable of.
    •     The Breathing Rate is faster in women and children than in Men.
    •     Approximately 1 litre of air is always stay in the lungs, no matter how we hardly breathe out.
    •     About 300 Million Alveoli was there in the Both lungs of an Adult
    •    The Left Lung is smaller than the Right Lung because the heart is in the middle of Chest Cavity as the Larger part bulges out to the left, Leaving less space for that lung.
    •     The Word Lung word came from the Old English word "lunge" which it means "Light".
    •     The lungs is the only organs that can Float on the Water.
    •    Approximately we are taking about 22,000 breaths every 24 hours.
    •    We have approximately 1500 miles of airways.
    •     The Surface area of the lungs is roughly same size as the Tennis Court.
    •     If placed one to one end the Capillaries in the lungs would Extend about 1,600 They can propel a sneeze at over 100mph (160 km/h).
    •     The surface area of the lungs is roughly the same size as a tennis court.
    •    We lose about half a litre of water a day through breathing.
    •    We breathe an average of 8 litres of air per minute, even when sitting – this is the equivalent of 4 average sized bottles of coca-cola.
    •     The lungs breathe about 400 cubic feet of air each day.kilometers.
    •     More than 1.4 million cases of lung cancer are diagnosed each year worldwide.
    •     Every 30 seconds someone, somewhere in the world dies of lung cancer. This is equal to 3,000 people every day worldwide.
    •    If diagnosed early enough, lung cancer may be curable.
    •     There are currently almost 1,000 clinical trials taking place in the world studying treatments for lung cancer.
    •     Today there are more than 20 phase III trials ongoing evaluating potential drugs for the treatment of lung cancer.
    •    The past decade of biomedical research has provided an enormous amount of information about lung cancer and its molecular processes. About 50 different components of molecular function are being targeted by for the treatment of lung cancer, including currently available drugs and those being tested in clinical trials, offering great new hope for patients.
    •     The women’s free diving world record was recently set by New Zealander Kathryn McPhee who broke the record on 9 August 2008, swimming to a depth of 151 metres in 2 minutes and 48 seconds – a greater depth than the height of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
    •     The Guinness World Record for the most powerful lungs is held by Manjit Singh, from the UK, who managed to inflate a meteorological balloon to a diameter of 8 feet, in 42 minutes.
    •     The 1968 Olympics were held in Mexico City at an altitude of 7300 feet – where the average air pressure is 25% lower than at sea level. This may explain why four of the five endurance track events held there were won by men who came from high altitudes.
    •    With practice, the lungs can hold a breath for up to 10 minutes – this was demonstrated recently by the free diver Tom Sietas, who held his breath underwater for 10 minutes and 12 seconds.
Do you know that you can fracture your rib if you sneeze too hard enough and you can also kill yourself if you try to suppress a sneeze, because your the blood vessel in your head or neck can rupture which easily leads to death.
Have you now seen what your lungs are capable of doing,so therefore, add value to your lungs.

    • Approximately 15% of all cancers worldwide are due to infections. Undeveloped countries have a higher rate of cancers due to infection (26%) than in developed countries (8%). The microbes most responsible for cancer are the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (gastric cancer), HPV (cervical and other cancers), and Hepatitis B and C (liver cancer).
    • Researchers believe that more than half of all cancers and cancer deaths are potentially preventable.
    • Lung, prostate, and stomach cancers are the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men. Breast, cervix, and colorectal cancers are the most commonly diagnosed cancers in women.
    • In 2008, cervical cancer was the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in women worldwide. An estimated 529,800 were diagnosed, with over 85% of those diagnosed in developing countries.
    • The earliest description of cancer was found in the Edwin Smith Papyrus dating back to 1600 B.C. It describes what appears to be breast cancer. Though breast cancer was treated by cauterization with a tool called a “fire drill,” the author ultimately wrote, “There is no treatment.”
    • The word “cancer” is related to the Greek word “crab” because its finger-like projections were similar to the shape of the crab. Galen, a Roman physician, used the word oncos, which is Greek for “swelling.”
    • Since February 2009, over 40 million doses of Gardasil have been distributed globally. The FDA and the CDC claim that Gardisal prevents certain types of cervical cancer and that it is safe.

    • Approximately 77% of all cancers are diagnosed in people who are 55 years old or older.i
    • The National institute of Health (NIH) posits that the cost of cancer in 2007 in the U.S. was $226.8 billion overall. Globally, the economic impact of cancer is substantially higher than any other cause of death.
    • The majority of research shows being overweight adversely affects survival for postmenopausal women with breast cancer. Conversely, postmenopausal women who are more physically active are less likely to die from breast cancer.
    • While many types of cancers have declined in recent years—including cervical, colorectal, stomach, and lung cancers—other types of cancers have been increasing, including HPV-related oropharyngeal, esophageal adenocarcinoma, melanoma of the skin, and cancers of the pancreas, liver, and intrahepatic bile duct, as well as thyroid and kidney and renal pelvis cancers.
    • African Americans are more likely than any other racial group to develop and die from cancer. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have the lowest overall cancer rates.
    • There are 28 million cancer survivors worldwide.
    • Cancer is not just one disease; rather it is a set of diseases. Different agents cause each type of cancer.
    • Human papillomavrius (HPV) infection is the most common sexually transmitted viral infection and is the causative agent of cervical cancer. Although it is the causative agent, most women who are infected do not develop cancer.
    • Women who have no children or who have their first pregnancy after the age of 30 have a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer than those who become pregnant while they are younger. Breast-feeding may also reduce the risk of breast cancer slightly.
    • The lifetime risk of a man in the United State of developing an invasive cancer is 45%.
    • Pharmaceutical companies that market successful cancer drugs are some of the biggest corporations in the world. While there is currently a shortage of cancer drugs, only about 10% of the shortages are due to lack of raw materials. Most shortages are due to corporate decisions to cut down on production caused by money or quality problems.
    • Poor dental hygiene can cause gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums. Over time, high levels of inflammation in the body can increase a person’s risk of developing cancer.
    • Studies have found that Holocaust survivors are at a greater risk for developing cancer, mainly due to intense calorie deprivation and stress during WWII.
    • Approximately 175,300 new cancer cases occurred globally in children up to age 14 in 2008. An estimated 96,400 children died from cancer in 2008.
    • An estimated 12,060 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer and 1,240 will die from cancer annually. Childhood cancers represent less than 1% of all new cancer diagnoses, yet it is the second leading cause of death in children, second to accidents.
    • Professor Devra Davis argues that cancer research has been plagued by corporations and politicians manipulating and “fudging” data about cancer-causing toxins such as benzene and tobacco for money. Additionally, she argues that too much of the “War on Cancer” is misdirected by focusing more on treatment rather than on prevention.
    • Some researchers believe that the Pap smear was not implemented until more than a decade after it was proven to prevent cervical cancer because of fears it would undermine the private practice of medicine, leading to unnecessary surgery and death for millions of women.
    • Scientists claim that the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl produced the largest group of cancers in history from a single incident.
    • Breast cancer is considered a taboo in many Middle Eastern countries, and many women will not get tested because they fear being examined by male doctors.
    • During a 13.5-hour surgery, physicians were able to pull out a malignant brain tumor from an 11-year-old girl’s nose in Texas.
    • Men who have never married are up to 35% more likely to die from cancer than those who are married. In terms of surviving cancer, women also benefited from being married, but to a lesser extent.
    • A Massachusetts mother was convicted of attempted murder for withholding cancer medication from her autistic son. He was just 9 years old when he died of leukemia in 2009.
    • Cancer patients have twice the risk of suicide than the general population. Men are more likely to kill themselves immediately after a diagnosis.
    • Henreitta Lacks died of cervical cancer in 1951, but not before scientists at Johns Hopkins took samples of her tumor. Because it was the first instance of a successfully established “immortal” cell line, her cells (now called HeLa cells) have been used in several groundbreaking experiments, including polio vaccines and cloning. However, her story has not been without controversy because neither she nor her family gave permission for her cells to be harvested, and her family never benefited financially. Additionally, a HeLa cells contamination problem almost led to a Cold War incident.
    • Several factors increase the risk of cancer (officially known as malignant neoplasm), including pollutants, tobacco use, certain infections, radiation, obesity, and lack of physical exercise.
    • An estimated 5 to 10% of cancers are entirely hereditary. Most cancers develop through a combination of hereditary and environmental factors.
    • Smoking causes an estimated 90% of lung cancer. Tobacco has killed 50 million people in the last decade. If trends continue, a billion people will die from tobacco use and exposure this century, which equates to one person every six seconds.
    • Those who sleep less than six hours a night are more likely to develop colon cancer than those who sleep more.
    • Cancer has two main characteristics: abnormal cell growth and the ability to spread to other parts of the body (metastasis).
    • In 2008, there were an estimated 12,667,500 new cases of cancer worldwide. Eastern Asia had the most new cases (3,720,000) and Micronesia the fewest (700). North America had approximately 1,603,900 new cases.
    • One in eight deaths in the world are due to cancer. Cancer causes more deaths than AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined.
    • Cancer is the leading cause of death in developed countries and the second leading cause of death in developing countries, after heart disease. Globally, heart disease is the number one killer.
    • In 2008, 7.6 million people died of cancer globally, which equates to 21,000 cancer deaths a day. By 2030, 21.4 million new cancer cases are expected to occur globally with 13.2 million cancer deaths.
    • In 2006, a virus called xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus (XMRV) was discovered in prostate cells, leading scientists to believe the virus may play a role in causing aggressive prostate cancer.
    • Nitrites are chemical additives used to preserve and add flavoring to most lunch meats, including cold cuts and hot dogs. Once in the body, they react with body chemicals and turn into cancer-causing carcinogens. Americans eat more than 20 billion hot dogs per year.
    • The most common cancer in women globally is breast cancer, with an estimated 1.4 million new cases diagnosed in 2008. Breast cancer is also the leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide, with an estimated 458,400 deaths a year.

    THE HUMAN LIVER

The liver is a vital organ present in vertebrates and some other animals. It has a wide range of functions, including detoxification, protein synthesis, and production of biochemicals necessary for digestion. The liver is necessary for survival; there is currently no way to compensate for the absence of liver function in the long term, although new liver dialysis techniques can be used in the short term

The following are the role played by the HUMAN LIVER

    • Originator of blood: It made the blood which got your system up and running, even before you were born. In other words you wouldn't have been here without your liver.
    • Fresh proteins: Proteins are needed by your body to stay healthy and to grow. Without proteins you would not be able to grow properly.
    • Filters off poisons: It removes poisons from the air, exhaust smoke and chemicals you breathe in. Without the liver you would be choked and poisoned by the various pollutants.
    •  Helps in clotting: It is due to this clotting factor that in case you hurt or prick yourself accidentally, the bleeding is stopped. Without this factor, you would bleed to death even due to minor injuries.
    •  Fights against germs: It protects your body all the time from any germs or virus going into your body. It defends against the cold-germ, flu-bugs, and other antibodies which you inhale and destroys them or in most cases weakens them. With your liver, you would be goner, to any infection known to mankind.
    • 10.Produces cholesterol: The liver is also responsible for manufacturing cholesterol, producing about 80% of the same in your body. Cholesterol is important as it produces the steroid hormones required for your normal development and functioning. These include the sex hormones estrogen and progesterone in women and testosterone in men, which play a big role in reproduction.
    •  A store house of iron: It keeps a storehouse of iron reserves as even lots of vitamins, and other minerals which gives you the strength to carry on during the day.
    •  Makes bile: This is important as it helps to digest food. Without bile you would just waste away to nothing.
    •  Detoxifies poisonous substances: Various substances and chemicals, including alcohol, wine, beer, drugs (prescribed and given-over-the counter) and even illegal substances all are detoxified. Without the liver, all these bad habits can barely keep you alive.
    • A store house of energy: Just like a battery, it stocks up sugar (carbohydrates, glucose and fat). And whenever your body requires it, it uses it. With out this energy the blood sugar level in your blood can fall drastically and you would slip into a coma.

               PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR THE LIVER

    •   Be wary of aerosol sprays, bug sprays, mildew sprays, paint sprays and even the other chemical sprays or even mosquito coils you use. Be careful of this stuff you breathe in. Please remember, your liver has to detoxify what you breathe in, excess intake of this can damage your liver. Especially when cleaning with aerosol sprays ensure the room is well ventilated and you are wearing a mask too.
    •  Be careful of what gets on your skin. The pesticides which are sprayed on plants and vegetables not only kill insects but even hit your liver, through your skin and destroy the cells making up the liver. The reason is these are chemicals too. Therefore make sure to cover your skin with gloves, long sleeved materials, a hat and a mask whenever there is insecticide in the air or if you are handling it.
    •  Most importantly, your liver would not let you know it's in trouble and at the end of its tether. It's basically a non-complainer. You got to remember that overloading and abusing such a precious organ with alcohol, drugs and other junk can damage it irreparably. This is the only warning you will get. So do think over and re-read the above. Do all you can to protect your liver, remember it is the only one you have.
    •  Don't overload your liver with any kind of alcohol, beer or wine. Keep within limits. In some case even a drink daily can cause great damage to your liver.
    •  Drugs of any kind are chemicals and when these are mixed up without a qualified doctor's advice can be poisonous for your liver and damage it badly.
    •  Scars to your liver are caused quite easily; these are what are known as ‘Cirrhosis' of the liver, which is permanent. These are chronic inflammation that progresses and ultimately leads to organ failure.
    •  Sometimes due to illnesses, taking medicines becomes necessary. But taking pills when they are not necessary due to habit formation is bad. These chemicals can badly hurt your liver causing it to under-perform.

    THE HUMAN HEART

Heart is one of the most important organ in the body of higher animals including human being which play the role of pumping machine in the body. So how much do you know about this organ?what are it's primary assignment? You  don't have to go anywhere the answers are here.
      •     Early Egyptians believed that the heart and other major organs had wills of their own and would move around inside the body.
      •     An anonymous contributor to the Hippocratic Collection (or Canon) believed vessel valves kept impurities out of the heart, since the intelligence of man was believed to lie in the left cavity.
      •     Plato theorized that reasoning originated with the brain, but that passions originated in the “fiery” heart.
      •     The term “heartfelt” originated from Aristotle’s philosophy that the heart collected sensory input from the peripheral organs through the blood vessels. It was from those perceptions that thought and emotions arose.
      •     Prolonged lack of sleep can cause irregular jumping heartbeats called premature ventricular contractions (PVCs).
      •     Some heavy snorers may have a condition called obtrusive sleep apnea (OSA), which can negatively affect the heart.
      •     Cocaine affects the heart’s electrical activity and causes spasm of the arteries, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke, even in healthy people.
      •     Galen of Pergamum, a prominent surgeon to Roman gladiators, demonstrated that blood, not air, filled arteries, as Hippocrates had concluded. However, he also believed that the heart acted as a low-temperature oven to keep the blood warm and that blood trickled from one side of the heart to the other through tiny holes in the heart.
      •     Galen agreed with Aristotle that the heart was the body’s source of heat, a type of “lamp” fueled by blood from the liver and fanned into spirituous flame by air from the lungs. The brain merely served to cool the blood.
      •     In 1929, German surgeon Werner Forssmann (1904-1979) examined the inside of his own heart by threading a catheter into his arm vein and pushing it 20 inches and into his heart, inventing cardiac catheterization, a now common procedure.
      •     On December 3, 1967, Dr. Christiaan Barnard (1922-2001) of South Africa transplanted a human heart into the body of Louis Washansky. Although the recipient lived only 18 days, it is considered the first successful heart transplant.
      •     “Atrium” is Latin for “entrance hall,” and “ventricle” is Latin for “little belly.”
      •     A woman’s heart typically beats faster than a man’s. The heart of an average man beats approximately 70 times a minute, whereas the average woman has a heart rate of 78 beats per minute.
      •     Blood is actually a tissue. When the body is at rest, it takes only six seconds for the blood to go from the heart to the lungs and back, only eight seconds for it to go the brain and back, and only 16 seconds for it to reach the toes and travel all the way back to the heart.
      •     French physician Rene Laennec (1781-1826) invented the stethoscope when he felt it was inappropriate to place his ear on his large-buxomed female patients' chests.f
      •     Physician Erasistratus of Chios (304-250 B.C.) was the first to discover that the heart functioned as a natural pump.
      •     In his text De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem, the father of modern anatomy, Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), argued that the blood seeped from one ventricle to another through mysterious pores.
      •     Galen argued that the heart constantly produced blood. However, William Harvey’s (1578-1657) discovery of the circulation system in 1616 revealed that there was a finite amount of blood in the body and that it circulated in one direction.
      •     The right atrium holds about 3.5 tablespoons of blood. The right ventricle holds slightly more than a quarter cup of blood. The left atrium holds the same amount of blood as the right, but its walls are three times thicker.
      •     Grab a tennis ball and squeeze it tightly: that’s how hard the beating heart works to pump blood.
      •     In 1903, physiologist Willem Einthoven (1860-1927) invented the electrocardiograph, which measures electric current in the heart.
      •     The average adult heart beats 72 times a minute; 100,000 times a day; 3,600,000 times a year; and 2.5 billion times during a lifetime.
      •     Though weighing only 11 ounces on average, a healthy heart pumps 2,000 gallons of blood through 60,000 miles of blood vessels each day.
      •     A kitchen faucet would need to be turned on all the way for at least 45 years to equal the amount of blood pumped by the heart in an average lifetime.
      •     The volume of blood pumped by the heart can vary over a wide range, from five to 30 liters per minute.
      •     Every day, the heart creates enough energy to drive a truck 20 miles. In a lifetime, that is equivalent to driving to the moon and back.
      •     Because the heart has its own electrical impulse, it can continue to beat even when separated from the body, as long as it has an adequate supply of oxygen.
      •     The fetal heart rate is approximately twice as fast as an adult’s, at about 150 beats per minute. By the time a fetus is 12 weeks old, its heart pumps an amazing 60 pints of blood a day.
      •     The heart pumps blood to almost all of the body’s 75 trillion cells. Only the corneas receive no blood supply.
      •
      •     During an average lifetime, the heart will pump nearly 1.5 million barrels of blood—enough to fill 200 train tank cars.
      •     Five percent of blood supplies the heart, 15-20% goes to the brain and central nervous system, and 22% goes to the kidneys.
      •     The “thump-thump” of a heartbeat is the sound made by the four valves of the heart closing.
      •     The heart does the most physical work of any muscle during a lifetime. The power output of the heart ranges from 1-5 watts. While the quadriceps can produce 100 watts for a few minutes, an output of one watt for 80 years is equal to 2.5 gigajoules.
      •     The heart begins beating at four weeks after conception and does not stop until death.
      •     A newborn baby has about one cup of blood in circulation. An adult human has about four to five quarts which the heart pumps to all the tissues and to and from the lungs in about one minute while beating 75 times.
      •     The heart pumps oxygenated blood through the aorta (the largest artery) at about 1 mile (1.6 km) per hour. By the time blood reaches the capillaries, it is moving at around 43 inches (109 cm) per hour.
